Bike Facilities in
Delaware County PA and Vicinity
The interactive map below provides an overview of bicycle-friendly facilities in the western suburbs of Philadelphia. It covers Delaware County, Pennsylvania and the immediate vicinity. It displays the following existing off-road and on-road facilities together in one place:
Multi-Use Trails: trails intended for cycling, with paved or well-packed stone surface.
Useful local paved park paths and shortcuts.
Bike Lanes: with Bike Lane signs and/or surface markings.
Designated Bike Routes: reasonable routes with signage placed by municipality, county or state.
Bikeable striped road shoulders.
These have been pulled together from various sources, grouped and color-coded in the map legend. The map is intended for use by people in the general public who want to know more about provisions for cycling in this area.
The map does not include:
Shared-Lane treatments alone: Just having "Share the Road" or "Bikes May Use Full Lane" signs and sharrows alone does not rise to the level of a true safety-enhancing "bike facility."
Mountain biking trails: These are not for average people on average bicycles.
Local neighborhood "Low Traffic Stress" roads: There are simply too many local residential side streets to map, and highlighting them all on the map would make it more confusing and less useful.
Major trails and Philadelphia Bike Lanes that extend too far from Delaware County and Lower Merion, which would make the map zoom out too far when first opened.
For reference, PennDOT's 2021 guidance summary for appropriate on-road bicycle facilities, based on traffic speed and volume, is available here.
