Philadelphia Western Suburbs Trail Summit |
Our annual "Philadelphia Western Suburbs Trail Summit" has grown from a local event in 2013, when Haverford Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Haverford Trails held a "summit" for people interested in trail development. We have gathered the speakers' presentations since 2017 here, so that this wealth of information can remain available and informative to everyone. Click or tap here. | |
The Circuit Trails |
Greater Philadelphia is the proud home of the Circuit Trails, a vast regional trail network, composed of hundreds of miles of trails, that is growing in size each year. One of America’s largest trail networks, the Circuit is currently composed of more than 370 miles of completed trails with a vision of completing more than 800 miles of interconnected trails across the nine-county region in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Nearly 65 nonprofit organizations, foundations and agencies are working to advance the completion of the Circuit Trails. A premiere regional amenity, the Circuit Trails connect people to jobs, communities, parks and waterways. Learn more at www.circuittrails.org. |

Essentials of Bicycle Parking: |
Don't buy and install a bad bike rack design! Take the time to buy a good one and place it properly, with sufficient support and adequate space. People "in the know" know the difference, and a bad, ill-informed choice reflects badly on your business or organization.
Click or tap here for a short, informative and authoritative guide that provides the basics you need to know. It has been compiled by the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (
APBP), the professional organization for bicycle and pedestrian planners, designers, engineers, advocates and others. |
"Micromobility Devices": |
Pedal-assist bicycles, e-bikes, electric scooters, Segways, powered skateboards, one-wheel motorized balance boards... There's been an explosion of options for getting around more easily with something less than a car or motorcycle. But what can you use, and where? Laws and local regulations are playing "catch up", but here is a quick visual
fact sheet from PennDOT.
Note that electric-powered scooters, skateboards and unicycles are illegal on public roadways in Pennsylvania. |

Great DVRPC Regional Map-Based Resources |
The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) is the regional planning agency for the Greater Philadelphia area. It conducts studies and oversees the allocation of transportation funding for our region. It works in relative obscurity, so unfortunately not all of its studies get the attention they deserve. Here are a few terrific DVRPC online map-based studies and resources related to trails, bicycling and walking: |
For a multi-layered overview of the Circuit Trails and the status of its many links, see www.dvrpc.org/webmaps/thecircuit. Hint: Unclick the "Pipeline" and "Planned" layers to get a better picture of the current situation. |
The DVRPC Pedestrian Portal at walk.dvrpc.org offers a detailed inventory of the sidewalks in our region. Hints: click on "View our regional sidewalk map" and zoom in to carefully study. |
You can "geek out" like a planner studying the regional Bicycle Low Traffic Stress map at www.dvrpc.org/Products/WEB20030. Hints: Click on "Launch Project" to see the map, then click on the left-most icon at the bottom, then select only the "Bicycle Facilities" and "LTS 1&2 Islands" layers. |
