Directions from Previous Site: The "Home of the Cooper" is on the southwest side of historic "Haverford and Darby Road" just west of Dartmouth Lane. It can be seen almost directly across Darby Road from the Federal School (Site 17), as shown below.

Description and History: The "Home of the Cooper" is a 1 1/2 story one-room fieldstone structure with loft and corner fireplace, dating back to about 1750. Haverford's "Coopertown" area, one of the township's first named areas, has long derived its name from this old cooperage. The sheds where the staves were stored and barrels were assembled are long gone, but part of the home on the property was the old blacksmith shop. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has determined that the Darby/Marple Roads Historic District, which includes Allgates, the Federal School and the Cooperage, is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
